This week I was lucky enough to be invited to the new basement of Monster Island, a warehouse art space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for one of their weekend shows. Walking up to the venue, I heard the distant sound of girls singing in 3 part harmony, with a scruffy garage rock beat propelling them. When I walked in I could see and hear things more clearly and realized that the band Frankie Rose and The Outs were the real deal.
Fronted by Miss Frankie Rose, formerly of the Vivian Girls, this 5 piece (all girl) band made everyone stop and admire them with mouths agape. I imagined that this is what an early Sleater-Kinney show must’ve felt like in Seattle in 1998 or something – sweet voices soaked in sweat and reverb, bouncing off the brick basement wall. Nevertheless it made me excited to see that girls were taking matters into their own hands and with melodies and jams that would dominate any party. Check them out.
